• Surabaya zoo : Can Indonesia turn round " zoo of death "

Surabaya zoo: Can Indonesia turn round 'zoo of death'? Indonesia's Surabaya zoo - once the pride of the nation for having more species than others in the region - has come under attack for a series of animal deaths and other scandalous conditions. An endangered komodo dragon and a pregnant barking deer are among the animals recently found dead in the facility. Others are kept in cramped conditions or are chained up. The city government, which owns the zoo, is now promising change, saying it will run the zoo with international standard of care. Alice Budisatrijo reports.

  • Lion found hanging in cage in Indonesian zoo

Indonesia's Surabaya Zoo, sadly also known as the world's cruelest zoo, has seen another tragedy. An 18-month-old lion called Michael was found dead with his head stuck between steel cables. The zoo denied negligence, saying the animal must have been 'playing around.' The lion's body was removed before police were able to examine it and cannot be found now. Bizarrely, merely 24 hours earlier, a wildebeest died in its enclosure from a stomach problem. The zoo blames the wet weather for the death. Among the cruelties, one tiger last year died after its digestive tract was destroyed by the formaldehyde-laced meat it ate. A total of 43 animals died at the zoo between July and September last year. Dozens of petitions have been filed pleading for the zoo to shut down, but the Surabaya M...

International expert Ian Singleton believes it and almost all other zoos in Indonesia should be closed down ''or at very least forced to upgrade dramatically'' under strictly enforced deadlines. Last year the world was alerted to the problems at the zoo in Indonesia's second-largest city when a giraffe died and was found to have a 20-kilogram ball of plastic in its stomach. Last month, Rezak, another Sumatran tiger, died. He was old but also had lung disease contracted in a tiny, permanently damp, cage. The holding facilities were shocking, wet all the time,'' says Tony Sumampau, the head of the Indonesian Zoological Parks Association and now a consultant to the zoo. ''Most of the animals died because they got pneumonia, lung disease, TB, or from digestion problems because of the food supply.''These conditions, though, are a vast improvement on what the animals endured three years ago. There was an internal conflict among the management, and the staff were ... divided too,'' says curator Sri ''Penta'' Pentawati. ''They took sides and ... were more focused on the conflict than caring for the animals.''The result was horrific. The cages, some built in the 1920s, were tiny and fraying, the animals so in-bred that deer had antlers growing out the front of their heads. ➨Please Tweet the responsible Minister in Indonesia for this Zoo: Zulkifli Hassan► https://twitter.com/Zul_Hasan ▬►MORE INFOS & PETITIONS HERE ON MY PAGE @ FACEBOOK:▬▬▬▬►https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=332692020194564&set=a.110440022419766.11614.100003613067

A zoo in Surabaya, Indonesia, welcomes seven Komodo Dragon babies into its collection. Full Story: A zoo in Indonesia's East Java Province recently welcomed seven baby Komodo dragons. Surabaya zoo artificially incubated the eggs in the hope that they would have a better chance of survival, away from the dangers of preying lizards. [Anthan Warsito, Surabaya Zoo Spokesman]: (Male Bahasa Indonesia) "We have successfully hatched seven Komodo Dragon babies from 21 eggs we collected from two female komodos." The zoo has been successfully conducting artificial incubation of Komodo Dragon eggs since the 1990s. Warsito added that more komodo dragon babies were expected. [Anthan Warsito, Surabaya Zoo Spokesman]: (Male, Bahasa Indonesia) "There are 10 eggs that will be ready to hatch some time at the end of March or in April," he said. The latest seven Komodo dragon babies hatched on March 10 bring the total number in the zoo's collection to 63. Baby Komodo dragons weigh about 140-170 grams (5-6 ounces) each and when full grown they can be more than three metres (10 ft.) and weigh up to 100 kg (220 pounds). The life expectancy of a Komodo dragon is generally between 20 to 40 years. There is a stable population of about 3,000 to 5,000 of the Komodo dragons on the islands of Komodo, Gila Motang, Rinca, and Flores. However, a lack of egg-laying females, poaching, human encroachment, and natural disasters have driven the species to endangered status.
